Community Urged to Support Nonstop Air Service to Dallas
More than $325,000 has been pledged by the local community towards attracting new nonstop service to Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport, according to airport officials, who released the results of their 30-day fundraising efforts today.
"This effort and others demonstrate a focus on improved air service that has not existed in our community in the past," said Chattanooga Mayor Bob Corker. "I appreciate the hard work of the Chamber, the airport board and staff and the generosity of the business community in raising $325,000 in 30 days to help secure this important grant that, if received, will help us pursue additional new direct service for our citizens."
The Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce joined with the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport Authority in filing for a $750,000 grant under the Small Community Air Service Development Grant Program through the Department of Transportation (DOT). If awarded, the airport will use the funds to pursue a carrier to provide nonstop service to Dallas. As part of the application process, matching funds needed to be raised to exhibit strong community support. The airport set an ambitious goal of $300,000 to be raised.
"Better air service is a key driver of economic growth," said Tom Edd Wilson, president and CEO of the Chattanooga Chamber. "That’s why the Chamber and the business community at large are supporting this campaign so strongly."
Vicky Gregg, President and CEO of BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, Chattanooga’s largest employer, said, "BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee is glad to support the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport's effort to improve air service in our city. More direct flights and additional service are not only important to existing businesses such as ours, but these improvements are also a critical component to recruiting and retaining new business and industry in Chattanooga."
The grant application was filed on May 12, but Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport Authority officials still need assistance. "Community support will be a deciding factor in the awarding of this grant, so we are asking every Chattanoogan to write a letter expressing their support for improving local air service to Norman Mineta, Secretary of the Department of Transportation," said Dan Jacobson, Chairman of the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport Authority. "A draft letter of support can be found on the airport’s website at www.chattairport.com."
Airport officials anticipate the DOT will announce the awarding of grants in approximately 90 days.
